NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin used 15 kills apiece from seniors Brittany Burton and Deborah Kirkham to upset Texas-Arlington in three games, 32-30, 30-22, 30-27, in Southland Conference volleyball action Friday evening.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 21-5 overall and 13-4 in the league while SFa improves to 21-5 and 13-3.
The Mavericks used a balanced attack to open the match with three kills apiece from Caley Smith, Morgan Rogers and Torie Dacus in the first game. However, SFA used a .225 attack percentage and eight kills from Brittany Burton to edge past UTA, 32-30.
SFA jumped on the Mavericks in the second set buildingan earlyseven point lead. The Mavericks cut the deficit to five with a kill by Dacus but couldn't pull any closer.
The Ladyjackscarried the momentum into game three and jumped to a 14-8 lead. UTA used a 4-0 run to pull within two at 16-18 but the Ladyjacks held on for a 30-27 win.
Ashley Van Antwerp recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 14 kills and 17 digs. Smith and Dacus contributed 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Libero Ashley Smith led the Mavs defense with 18 digs while setter Heather Dunn picked up 10 digs and 38 assists.
Texas-Arlington continues SLC play Tuesday as it travels to Texas-San Antonio for a 7 p.m. match.
