DALLAS, Texas - The shooting woes continued for the Texas-Arlington women's basketball team as the Mavs shot just 15-for-64 (.234) from the field in falling 65-40 to SMU Saturday evening at Moody Coliseum.
The Mavs (4-3) started the game off slow as the Mustangs jumped out quickly to a 13-4 lead behind the play of forwards Janielle Dodds and Sarah Davis. The duo combined to score the first 11 points for SMU.
After the two teams exchanged baskets, UTA held the Ponies scoreless over the next 5:09, while scoring seven points of its own. Katy Cobb would put an end to the drought with a pull-up in the paint before extending the lead with a 24-foot jumper from the top of the key.
The Mavs pulled back to within two points as Ashley Bobb connected on a shot inside and Tabitha Wesley hit a three-pointer from the left wing to put the game at 22-20 with 5:11 remaining in the half. The three-pointer by Wesley extended the Mavs streak to 81 straight games with a three-pointer.
A triple by Terra Wallace three minutes later would serve as UTA's only points the remainder of the half as the Mustangs extended the lead behind six quick points from Shonte Roberts to go into intermission with a 30-23 advantage.
The first half shooting woes continued for UTA as the team shot just 9-for-32 (.281) in the first half and committed 14 turnovers. UTA outrebounded the Ponies in the first half 25-12, including 15-3 on the offensive end.
The second half went from bad to worse for UTA as the team shot just 6-for-32 (.188) from the field in being outscored 35-17.
UTA crept to within three points at 33-30 at the 18:05 mark of the half as Wallace scored five quick points. The Ponies would put an end to any hopes for UTA as SMU went on an 18-5 run over the next eight minutes.
SMU (6-1) would continue to open up its lead in the second half by shooting 10-for-28 (.357) from the field and 5-for-10 (.500) from behind the arc. Sharee Shepard led the attack in the second half as she scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second stanza. She was joined in double figures by Dodds with 13 and Davis with 11.
UTA's leading scorer Rola Ogunoye was held to a season-low four points on 2-for-11 shooting from the floor, despite pulling down a season-high 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Wallace and Bobb paced the team with eight points apiece.
The Mavs return to action on Dec. 18 when they travel to take on Florida State. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CST and will be televised on the Sunshine Network.
