MAVERICKS CLAIM FOUR-GAME WIN AT LAMAR

BEAUMONT, Texas - Just one night after suffering their first league loss, the Texas-Arlington Mavericks rebounded for a 3-1 victory over Lamar University in Southland Conference volleyball action Saturday. With the win UTA improves to 12-2 overall and holds a 4-1 mark in league action.

UTA couldn't recover in game one after the Lady Cards scored eight straight to open the game. The Mavericks hit just .041 in the 30-25 Lamar victory.

Game two was the complete opposite as it was UTA who jumped in front early, claiming a 10-2 advantage after a block by Torie Dacus and Melissa Marek. The Mavericks used a .405 attack percentage and seven kills from Ashley Van Antwerp to cruise to a 30-15 win.

A Dacus kill followed by a service ace gave the Mavericks their largest advantage of the game at 25-18. Lamar battled to pull within three but UTA closed the game with a 4-0 run.

The Mavericks used a .395 hitting percentage compared to just .128 of Lamar to take game four, 30-18.

Van Antwerp paced UTA at the net with a career high 20 kills. Smith followed with 15 and Morgan Rogers chipped in with 10. Rogers led the defensive efforts with 16 digs followed by Torie Dacus (15), Smith (14) and Dani Johnson (12). Senior setter Heather Dunn dished out 48 assists and contributed seven kills.

Molli Abel and Nikki Perry led the Lady Cards with 15 kills apiece.

Texas-Arlington will return to action Friday when it plays host to league rival Stephen F. Austin. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
