FORT WORTH, Texas - After going scoreless in the first half, TCU All-America candidate Sandora Irvin took over the game in the second half as she scored the first seven points of the half on her way to 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots as the Horned Frogs pulled away in the second half for a 60-42 victory over Texas-Arlington Sunday afternoon at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
TCU (9-5) came out like a different team in the second half on a 20-6 run to open up an 18-point lead just over six minutes into the half. Irvin led the charge as she scored 12 points and Niki Newton added four.
UTA (5-6) would not roll over and die as it turned up the defensive pressure and held the Frogs scoreless over the next 7:11, but only managed to score five points of their own. Terra Wallace hit a pair of free throws and Tojjinay Thompson hit the team's second three-pointer of the game.
Irvin would put an end to the drought with a pair of free throws before Vanessa Clemintino would add a basket. Rola Ogunoye would score her only points of the second half on a driving layup past Irvin with 3:45 to play to cut the deficit to 52-37. Natasha Lacy would score five quick points to help push the advantage to 19 points. Wallace would reach double figures for the 10th time on a three-pointer and Tamara Vaughn closed out the scoring with a short jumper with 40 seconds remaining.
TCU jumped out of the gates quickly as JimAnne Baker and Lacy hit back-to-back three pointers to open the scoring. Ogunoye and Ashley Bobb would answer back with a pair of baskets for UTA and brought the Mavs to within 8-4 at the 18:02 mark.
The Mavs would gain the lead just moments later as another bucket from Ogunoye sparked an 8-0 run that put the Mavs up 12-8 at the 14:11 mark. Terra Wallace tied the game up with a layup and following a pair of Ogunoye free throws, Wallace got a rebound and put it up-and-in. Ogunoye's free throws moved her into third place on the school's all-time scoring list.
After going scoreless for 5:27, the Frogs scored the game's next seven points and regained the lead with 10:31 showing on the first half clock on an Ashley Davis triple. Ogunoye would respond again with another basket off a rebound and connected on one-of-two from the free throw line to tie the game at 15-15 at the 9:15 mark.
TCU would again seize control of the game and open up its largest lead of the first half at 26-19. The Mavs would trim the deficit and the end of the half as Tabitha Wesley hit a three-pointer for the final points of the half and send the teams to recess with TCU ahead 28-24. Wesley's three extended UTA's streak to 85 straight games with a three-pointer.
Ogunoye led the offense with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Wallace added 11 points. Irving was joined in double figures by Lacy with 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
For the game, UTA shot just 17-for-69 (.246) from the field and 3-for-18 (.167) from long range. UTA forced 26 TCU turnovers and converted them into 23 points. The Mavs also outscored TCU 16-4 on second-chance points.
The Mavs return to action on Jan. 6 when they open up conference play at Nicholls State. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m. at Stopher Gym.
