HOUSTON, Texas - Junior college transfer Kelley Jackson began his UTA career in impressive fashion with a first-place finish in the 35-pound weight throw and a third place in the shot put to highlight action at the 2005 Houston Indoor Opener at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse on the University of Houston campus Jan. 15.
Jackson tossed the weight 55-feet, 10.5 inches for the top prize. He also heaved the put 53-00.25 for third place.
Senior distance runner Jacob Cedertun began his final season with a first place in the mile run with a time of 4-minutes, 19.93 seconds,. He clocked the third fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries with a 4:16.77 but easily won the finals by more than four seconds over second place Mitch Sanders of Baylor.
Other top Mavericks performance include: - Glenn Taylor, ninth-place in the 200 meters with a 22.02.
- Adam Stafford, sixth place in the 55-meter hurdles with a 7.50.
- Paul Whitty, ninth place in the 55-meter hurdles with an 8.19.
- Levi Armstrong and Shay Collett with a 2-3 finish in the pole vault with heights of 16-06.75 and 16-00.75.
- Fifth place by Devario Johnson in the "A" section on the men's long jump with a leap of 22-feet, 04.50-inches.
The track team will travel to Norman, Okla., for a quadrangular meet with Oklahoma, Texas A&M and TCU on Saturday, Jan. 22.
