MAVS WIN OKLAHOMA CLASSIC

Jan. 22, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. - Junior transfer Kelley Jackson (Baltimore, Md.) continued his assault in the throws with first place finishes in the 35-pound weight throw and the shot put to propel UTA's men's indoor track team to a one-point win over host Oklahoma at the Oklahoma Classic here Saturday.

In the weight throw, Jackson bettered his closest competitor by more than 17-feet with a throw of 55-feet, 10.5 inches for the win. In the shot put, he bettered Oklahoma's Josh Bookout by almost seven feet with an effort of 54-10.25 for the win.

Devario Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas) recorded a personal-best leap of 23-feet, 6.75-inches in the long jump for first place. Junior Adam Stafford (Merkel, Texas) won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.06 seconds as the Mavericks went 1-3-4-5 to dominate the event.

Transfer Jon McDowell (Odessa, Texas) placed third with an 8.30, Paul Whitty (London, Ontario, Canada) was fourth at 8.32 and Edward Broadnax (The Colony, Texas) was fifth with an 8.34.

In the women's division, UTA captured four first-place finishes en route to 129.50 points and a second-place finish nine points behind North Texas (138.5).

Senior runner Lisa Haglund (Bastad, Sweden) won the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:08.37. Junior Ivorita Taylor won the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:14.21. The time was just more than a second off the meet record time of 2:13.13 by Svetlana Badrankova of Texas-El Paso in 2000. Freshman Carranda Mose (Houston, Texas) was second with a 2:22.09.

Senior sprinter Brittany Williams (Fort Worth, Texas) won the 200-meter dash with a 25.11. Junior transfer Ellen Garrison (St Louis, Mo.) was third with a 25.45.

Junior Lacey Moore (Great Bend, Kan.) won the women's pole vault with a vault of 10-08.

UTA returns to Norman, Okla. Feb. 5 for the J.D. Martin Invitational. The meet is the final tune-up before the Southland Conference Indoor Track Championships, Feb. 18-19, in Houston, Texas.
