HOUSTON - No. 75 Texas-Arlington dropped its season opener at 16th-ranked Rice University as the Owls defeated the Mavericks 5-1 Sunday afternoon in men's tennis action at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston.

The match began and ended with singles action after doubles play was cancelled.

Ian Vazquez was the lone Maverick to claim victory, defeating Filip Zivojinovic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 position.

UTA (0-1) will return to action Wednesday when it plays host to TCU at the UTA Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
