AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas-Arlington men's tennis team competed in the University of Texas Fall Classic this past weekend at the UT Pennick-Allison Tennis Center.

The tournament consisted of a 32-player singles bracket and a 16-team doubles draw. Players from Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Virginia, Arkansas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and other schools competed in the tournament.

The three-day event was originally scheduled for Sept. 23-25 but was postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Rita.

In singles play, freshman Diego Mattar advanced to the round of 16, defeating Rice's Hooney Shin, 6-2, 7-6, and Texas Tech's Dimitrio Martinez, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6, before falling to Texas A&M's Brian Wooten, 6-1, 6-2. Wooten is ranked #90 in the nation.

Senior Sandy Farquharson won his opening round match versus Texas-San Antonio's Robin Fernandes, 6-0, 6-0, before losing to #63 Michal Kokta of Baylor, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 16.

Junior Daniel Omana fell in the opening round to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Andrey Kumanstov, 6-2, 6-4, but rebounded to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. He defeated Texas Tech's Mario Janjic, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8, and fellow UTA teammate Ian Vazquez, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, before losing to Texas Tech's Caistan Rojmar, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0.

Also competing for the Mavericks, were sophomore Alberto Agis, junior Manuel Gonzalez, and seniors Neils Buksik and Ian Vazquez. All four guys lost in the opening round of singles play. Buksik and Vazquez both won their first match in the consolation bracket but fell in the second round.

In doubles play, Farquharson and Omana were the only doubles team to advance past the first round. The duo defeated Texas-San Antonio's Robin Fernandez and Anthony Portois, 8-2, before losing to Texas A&M's John Nallon and Wooten, 8-4.

Agis and Buksik rebounded after their opening-round loss to defeat Tulane's Nigel Barton and Jonah Kane-West, 9-7, and Texas' Bernhard Deussner and Tulane's Maydy El Mihdawy, 8-6 to reach the consolation bracket finals. There they fell to Texas Tech's Michel Breeler and Dimitrio Martinez, 8-6.

This tournament marks end of the Mavericks' fall season. Texas-Arlington will open the spring season when they play at the Rice Indoor Jan. 20-22.
