DALLAS, Texas - SMU used the momentum it gained at the end of the first half and began the second half on a 21-8 run to turn an early deficit into an easy 67-58 victory over Texas-Arlington Wednesday evening at Moody Coliseum.
The Mavs (1-2) got the offense going immediately as a Tojjinay Thompson layup, followed by a Maryann Abanobi three-pointer and Ashley Bobb steal and layup gave UTA the early 7-3 lead. Back-to-back triples from Terra Wallace and Abanobi gave the Mavs an 18-10 advantage at the 9:51 mark of the half.
From that point on it was all SMU (3-3) as a pair of Kendall Shead free throws and a Brittany Barker layup capped off a 13-2 run that gave the Mustangs the lead for good.
"We played up and down," said head coach Donna Capps. "I thought that the first 10 minutes we played really smart, really focused and were intense and then we relaxed and didn't adjust to calling the game tight. I am pretty disappointed with effort off the bench. We have a lot of sole searching to do and make some changes."
UTA would get another trifecta from Wallace and a pair of free throws to pull within four points at the 2:27 mark before Elbie Gates came off the bench to score nine straight points to push the advantage back to 12 points. Melanie Lane would close out the half with a free throw to send the teams to recess with SMU ahead 39-28.
The momentum gained at the end of the first half from the Mustangs carried over as after the Mavs trimmed the deficit to nine points, a 13-2 SMU run broke the game wide open to gain a 22-point advantage.
The Mavs did not roll over as a Jamie Buxkemper three-pointer helped the Mavs cut into the deficit late in the game. Wallace scored six of her game-high 20 points down the stretch as the Mavs ended the game on a 12-3 run for the final deficit of nine points.
Sarah Davis led four Mustangs in double figures with 11 points. Sharee Shepherd, Janielle Dodds and Juli Colli each added 10 points. Wallace was the only Mav in double figures as Thompson added seven and Abanobi and Ashley Bobb each chipped in six.
Foul shooting was the story as SMU connected on 22-of-27 (.815) from the charity stripe, while the Mavs hit only 13-of-21 (.619). UTA continued its dominance on the offensive glass as they collected 18 rebounds on the offensive end.
The Mavs return to action on Dec. 3 as they travel to take on New Mexico State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CST.
