AUSTIN, Texas - Daniel Gibson scored 29 points to lead #2 Texas past Texas-Arlington, 93-55 Saturday evening at the Frank Erwin Center.
In the second half, Texas (7-0) opened on a 10-6 run in the first five minutes to take a 50-32 lead with 15:42 remaining. Gibson led the Longhorns during the stretch with five points and P.J. Tucker added three points.
The Longhorns poured it on after that, outscoring Texas-Arlington 37-20 over the next 10 minutes. Gibson again led the way with 20 points during the stretch, which included three treys.
"Texas took it to us tonight in every facet of the game," UTA head coach Eddie McCarter said. "But that's nothing new, because they have done it all season."
Senior Brady Dawkins led the Mavericks (4-4) with 12 points and sophomore Larry Posey added 10 points off of the bench. Senior Jarrett Howell led the team with four assists.
Gibson was 13-of-20 from the field and he also led the Longhorns with six assists. Tucker added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Brad Buckman chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Texas opened the game on a 9-0 run in the first four minutes of the ballgame. Tucker sparked the Longhorns with a layup and a three-point play.
Texas-Arlington fought back with a 5-0 run in the next minute to cut the lead to 9-5 with 15:24 remaining in the first half. Howell registered a layup and Dawkins hit a long trey for the Mavericks during the run.
LaMarcus Aldridge and Buckman took over for the next eight minutes as the Longhorns raced to a 22-14 lead with 7:35 remaining in the first frame. One of Buckman's buckets was from downtown.
Another Dawkins shot from long range and four points off of the bench from senior Kenneth Henderson helped the Mavericks to an 11-7 run to cut the Longhorn lead to 29-25, with 3:49 left in the half.
Texas finished the half on an 11-1 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Kenton Paulino with two seconds remaining. The Longhorns held a 40-26 advantage at the break.
Buckman led all scorers at halftime with 11 points. Dawkins led a balanced Maverick attack with six points. Seven players scored for Texas-Arlington in the first frame.
Texas-Arlington will be back in action Saturday when it travels to take on cross-town rival TCU. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at Daniel Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas.
