LATE RUN SAVES TCU

Dec. 30, 2005

Box Score

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU used a 14-2 run in late stages of the second half to hold off a resilient Texas-Arlington team and hand the Mavs a 70-58 loss Friday evening at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

With the score tied 56-56 with 7:11 remaining in the game, TCU (5-5) would score the next eight points of the contest as four different Frogs got into the scoring column. Terra Wallace would put an end to the run with a long jumper, but that would serve as the final points of the game for UTA as TCU pushed the lead out to its final margin.

The Mavs came out of the locker room in the second half and used some physical play and hot shooting to erase a seven-point deficit. The 10-3 run in the first five minutes was capped off by a Maryann Abanobi jumper that knotted the score 40-40.

Melanie Lane started the half with a basket in the paint and Ashley Bobb followed with a pair of freebies. After Ashley Davis got the Frogs on the board, Tojjinay Thompson, Terra Wallace and Abanobi knotted the game.

UTA took its first lead of the game as Thompson hit her second shot in the paint. The two teams exchanged baskets and with the Mavs trailing by one, Wallace stepped into a three-pointer from just in front of her own bench and put the team back in front 47-45 with 11:03 remaining. TCU would regain the lead by one before a pair of Ashley Cole freebies gave the Mavs back the one-point advantage.

Just moments later, the Mavs again found themselves down by three points when Abanobi nailed a triple and Cole followed with a long two-pointer to give the Mavs their final lead of the game.

UTA (5-5) and TCU went back-and-forth in the game's opening minutes as the Mavs got baskets from Abanobi and Wallace to hold even at 4-4.

Over the next five minutes, TCU would take advantage of sloppy ball control from the Mavs and open up a 16-6 advantage on a Lorie Rayford-Butler basket.

The Mavs would gain back some momentum as Wallace would hit a triple and Cole would follow with a long jumper. Davis put an end to the momentum as she hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the advantage to 13 points.

It was all catch from UTA the remainder of the half as Wallace would nail a deep triple and a pair of Abanobi free throws and a Lane layup pulled UTA to within seven points at the 5:04 mark.

Natasha Lacy would push the advantage back to 11 points at the 3:06 mark with a pair of free throws and a layup. UTA would score the final five points of the half to go into halftime trailing 37-30.

Wallace led the offensive attack with 23 points, marking the sixth time she has reached the 20-point plateau this season. Lacy matched Wallace with 23 points of her own. She was joined in double figures by Davis with 17 points and Jenna Lohse's 10. Lane pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for the Mavs.

The Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Cornell in the 2005 home opener. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Texas Hall.
