LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Texas-Arlington's Autumn Petrino connected for the second grand slam of her career Sunday morning as the Lady Mavericks pounded Utah Valley State College 9-1 in their final game at the Hilton Las Cruces Softball Classic hosted by New Mexico State. With the win, UTA improves to 3-5 on the year.
The Lady Mavericks capitalized on UVSC errors, plating five unearned runs in the contest. Petrino's shot came in the sixth inning, an inning in which UTA plated seven runs to end the game by way of the mercy rule.
With just one out in the frame, Lacey Leadbetter reached on an error followed by a Kristin Moore single and an April Clougherty walk to load the bases. Katie Singleton knocked a run-producing single and Dee Jay Nelson reached on an error by the left fielder to set up Petrino's grand slam.
Elizabeth Fuentes was touched for just three hits in 6.0 innings of work. Fuentes struck out seven and allowed just one earned run as she picked up her first collegiate win.
Junior Katie Singleton was named to the all-tournament squad.
Texas-Arlington will get its final tune up before Southland Conference play begins at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tournament Feb. 18-20.
