UTA senior pole vaulter Levi Armstrong (Alvin, Texas) became the first Mavericks to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a provisional qualifying height of 17-1.75 to win the 2005 Tyson Invitational Track and Field Meet in Fayetteville, Ark. Saturday.
Armstrong was the bright spot of the weekend activity that saw the Mavs split and compete at two locations - the Tyson Invitational and the UH/Run Sport All-Comers Meet.
In Houston, distance runner Daniel Noah (Hitchcock, Texas) ran a season-best time of 8:48.67 in the 3,000 meters to place second.
Junior Kelley Jackson took third place in Arkansas in the 35-pound weight throw tih a toss of 57-02.
Paul Whitty (London, Ontario, Canada) won his heat in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09 and sophomore Jared Connaughton (Charlottetown, Canada) won his section in the 200 meters with a 22.01.
The men's and women's teams will compete at the 2005 Southland Conference Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston.
