UTA junior Kelley Jackson became the first Southland Conference individual champion of the year by winning the weight throw 59-feet, 02.5-inches to highlight action on the opening day of the 2005 Southland Conference Indoor Championships at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse here Friday.

The UTA men's team used Jackson's first-place effort to stand in fourth place with 30 points after the first day. Stephen F. Austin is trying to unseat three-time defending champion Texas State. SFA (58.5 points) leads both Texas State and McNeese State by 18.5 points. UTA stands in fourth followed by Sam Houston State 16.5, Northwestern State 13, Texas-San Antonio 11, Southeastern Louisiana nine and Lamar and Louisiana-Monroe with eight.

UTA got a third and fourth-place finish from Levi Armstrong and Shay Collett in the pole vault Friday. Armstrong, who was named the SLC Male Track Athlete of the Week last week after winning the Tyson Invitational with an NCAA provisional-qualifying vault of 17-01.75, cleared 16-02.75 and Collett 15-09.

In the high jump, Michael Sychrava cleared 6-04.75 for eighth place. The distance medley relay foursome of Jacob Cedertun, Jon McDowell, Davis Tagi and Daniel Noah took third place with a time of 10:22.64. SFA won the event with a 10:16.07.

The Mavericks qualified three hurdlers - Adam Stafford, Paul Whitty and Edward Broadnax - in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday.

Senior distance runner Jacob Cedertun qualified for Saturday' 800 meters and mile run. Tagi will also run in the 800 finals after a qualifying time of 1:59.05.

Glenn Taylor won Heat 2 of the 200-meter prelims the second fastest qualifying time of 21.97.

Competition resumes Saturday morning with the final three events of the men's heptathlon, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Field events get under way at 11:30 with running events starting at 1:30.
