BEAUMONT, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington men's tennis squad snapped Lamar's six match winning streak with a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon in the Southland Conference opener for both squads.
The Cardinals initiated the scoring with a sweep of doubles action to claim the first point of the afternoon.
UTA regrouped and moved on to take five of the six singles flights to earn the 5-2 advantage. At the top position, Sandy Farquharson dropped Juan Pablo Alatorre 6-4, 7-6. Diego Mattar edged past Ignacio Melus 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) in the third position while Alberto Agis came from one set down to drop Dean Clower at No. 4. Ian Vazquez blanked Emmanuel Olivier at the No. 5 position and at No. 6 Felipe Acosta dropped David Wanja 6-1, 6-1.
Emilio Kirby turned in the lone singles win for Lamar after outlasting Niels Buksik 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (9-7).
Texas-Arlington (2-3, 1-0) returns to the court Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
