HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Senior Jacob Cedertun capped off his collegiate career with a season-best time of 3-minutes, 53.80-seconds for second place in the 1,500 meters and then less than an hour later clocked a 1:51.38 to take fourth place in the 800 meters during the final day of the 2005 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Bowers Stadium Sunday.
For Cedertun, the 1,500-meter time was eight-tenths of a second off his personal best time and gave him his third all-SLC accolades in his career.
Sam Houston State claimed the top four spots in the 5,000 meters to put an exclamation point on winning their first league title with 188 points. UTA was fifth in the team standings with 88 points. Stephen F. Austin (126) placed second, Texas-San Antonio (96) third, Northwestern State (95) fourth and UTA. Texas State (63) finished sixth, McNeese State (56.5), Southeastern Louisiana (55), Lamar (44) and Louisiana-Monroe (6) rounded out the field.
Hurdlers Coby Morrison and Paul Whitty turned in regional-qualifying times on Sunday and earned all-SLC honors along the way.
Whitty, an NCAA national meet qualifier a year ago, finished second in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a season-best 14.15. Sam Houston's Adrian Ray set a new stadium mark with a 13.85.
Morrison held off a late charge to take second place in the 400-meter hurdles with a 51.34. The race was a fast one with the top five times regional qualifying marks, including UTA's Jon McDowell who clocked a 51.72 for fifth place.
Davis Tagi finished fifth in the 800 meters with a 1:52.63 and Glenn Taylor was eighth in the 200 meters with a 21.39.
In the triple jump, Travis Wright finished fourth at 14.94 meters (49-00.25) and Quinchun Carey claimed seventh with a leap of 14.62 meters (47-11.75).
