DES MOINES, Iowa - The UTA Shuttle Hurdle Relay Team of Paul Whitty, Jon McDowell, Ed Broadnax and Adam Stafford captured the 2005 Drake Relays title with a time of 58.59 on April 30.
The relay title marked the third straight season UTA has won a relay and the second time in three years the Mavs have won the Shuttle Hurdle event. In 2004, the Mavericks won the 4x100-meter relay. The team of Jared Connaughton Broadnax, Stafford and Whitty weathered driving rain to post a time of 41.29 for the title.
Stafford placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.25. Freshman Quinchun Carey finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 7.32 meters (24-00.25).
The men's 4x100-meter team of Whitty, Stafford, Connaughton and Taylor advanced t the finals with a qualifying time of 40.96. In the finals Connaughton was replaced by Carey and finished fifth with a 41.43.
The 4x400-meter relay (Taylor, Coby Morrison, McDowell and Aron Morgan) came within a second of a season-best time with a preliminary time of 3:15.73.

Jacob Cedertun pulled off a rare double with a win at the 2005 Mean Green Twilight Meet at Fouts Field in Denton, Texas, with a time of 1:51.53 on April 28. He followed that with a fourth place finish in the 1,500 meters with a season-best 3:56.92 at the RunSport/Rice Twilight Meet on April 30.
Davis Tagi (1:53.85) and Hunter Garner (1:55.86) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800 meters at UNT.
Freshman Jodi Broccoli-Hickey claimed eighth place in the 5,000 meters with a 15:44.85 and Daniel Noah took sixth lace in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Rice with a 9:38.66.
UTA will host the 25th UTA Open Friday and Saturday at Maverick Stadium.
