LUBBOCK, Texas - While one UTA middle distance runner ends his stellar collegiate career, another begins his race for greatness.
Freshman Idilio Campos (LaJoya, Texas) used a time of 1:56.81 to win the men's 800 meter-race during Friday's Wes Kittley Invitational and senior Jacob Cedertun (Eklsjo, Sweden) claimed Saturday's 800 meters at the Wes Kittley 6-Way Invitational with a 1:54.57.
It was quite a weekend for the 800-meter contingent of UTA who posted five times that scored points.
Joining Campos on Friday was senior Davis Tagi (Nakura, Kenya) who finished third with a 1:57.74 and freshman Robert Hughes (Copperas Cove, Texas) who finished fourth with a 1:59.43. Campos followed Cedertun Saturday with a time of 1:57.62 for third place.
Cedertun's 800-meter effort Saturday was his second win of the weekend after he claimed Friday's mile run with a 4:18.35.
Junior Quinchun Carey (Fort Worth, Texas), a NCAA qualifier in the long jump last spring, won Saturday's event with a leap of 6.97 meters (22-10.50). He finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.47 meters (44-00.25).
Freshman Andrew Duncan III (Austin, Texas) was second in Saturday's triple jump with a lap of 13.88 meters. Freshman Jeremy Williams (Abilene, Texas) scored points in his third straight meet with fifth place Saturday and a jump of 13.44 meters (44-01.25).
Freshman Byron Majors (Cameron, Texas) placed seventh in the 55-meter dash both days with identical 6.77 times. He also took sixth in the 200 meters with a 22.38 on Saturday.
Both men's and women's indoor track teams will compete at the Houston Invitational at the Bill Yeoman Field House Feb. 4. The Southland Conference Indoor Championships are Feb. 17-18 at the Yeoman Field House on the campus of the University of Houston.
