Nov. 10, 2006
The Scott Cross era begins Saturday as the UT Arlington men's basketball team opens the 2006-07 season when they host the UT-Tyler Patriots at Texas Hall.
Cross, a 1997 UT Arlington graduate, will prowl the sidelines as a head coach for the first time in his career. He served as an assistant coach to former Mav coach Eddie McCarter for eight seasons before being named the head coach last April. The game will serve as a scrimmage for UT-Tyler who has lost at Texas Hall the last two seasons, including an 87-72 Mav win Dec. 22, 2005.
UT Arlington returns two starters - junior center Jermaine Griffin (Houston, Texas) and junior forward Larry Posey (Houston, Texas) back from a 14-16 squad that finished seventh in the Southland Conference. The Mavericks have lost their last five season openers and have won just one of their last 11. Ten of the last 11 openers have been on the road, the only win came at Texas Hall against Texas Wesleyan (86-78) on Nov. 18, 2000.
UT Arlington will return to action Wednesday at North Texas at 7 p.m. and then at TCU on Saturday at noon.
