MAVS MEET UNBEATEN UT-PAN AM

Nov. 20, 2006

For the fourth straight game the UT Arlington men's basketball team face an undefeated team as the Mavericks host Texas-Pan American Tuesday at Texas Hall.

UT Arlington (2-1) enters the game after a double-overtime loss at TCU, 97-89.

UT Arlington rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 2:48 of regulation as TCU missed 10 free throws down the stretch and give the Mavs a chance to win.

For the second straight game, the Mavs appeared ready to win at the buzzer, but Larry Posey could not get a shot off in time after an inbounds pass from under the basket. In overtime, TCU guard Ryan Wall made 10-of-10 free throws in the second overtime to put the Mavs away. UTA played without junior center Jermaine Griffin for most of the game after being assessed three personal fouls in the first 3:00 of the game. Forwards Anthony Vereen and Larry Posey scored 22 points each to lead the scoring.

A win Tuesday would give the Mavericks their first 3-1 start since 1992-93 and just the fourth time in program history dating back to 1959. After Tuesday's game, UTA will play six of their next seven games on the road. The Mavericks travels to Edinburg Nov. 27 for a re-match with Texas-Pan American. UTA returns to Texas Hall Nov. 30 versus Austin College.

Texas-Pan American (4-0) stayed undefeated under first-year coach Tom Schuberth after defeating Southland Conference foe Texas State, 77-64, last Saturday.

NOTE: UTPA leads the overall season, 15-5, but UT Arlington has won the past three meetings... Tuesday is Mission Arlington Food Drive Night with half-price admission with the donation of three canned food items... UTA student can qualify for an Ipod with the donation of three canned food items.
