Nov. 6, 2006

Box Score

The UT Arlington Mavericks held Angelo State to just two field goals the first 16:00 of the second half and pulled away from the Rams for an 89-63 exhibition victory at Texas Hall Monday night.

Junior center Jermaine Griffin led the Mavericks with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Ro'ger Guidnard had 14 of his 17 points in the second half. Junior forward Larry Posey had 11 points and eight rebounds and junior guard Rodrick Epps added 10 points and a career-high eight assists.

Angelo State was led by Casey Forge with 22 points and eight rebounds. Baylor transfer Turner Phipps added 14 points.

"I thought we came out a little flat," said UT Arlington Head Men's Basketball Coach Scott Cross. "But I thought we did a good job of picking up the intensity in the second half. Our defense won this game tonight. We were able to take advantage of our defense and create some high percentage shots for our inside guys."

UT Arlington, who opens the season Saturday when they host UT-Tyler, went on a 13-4 run to open the season half to build a 55-40 lead with 13:44 remaining in the game after a Jermaine Griffin lay up.

In the first half, Forge kept ASU close with 11 points. He kit a three-pointer with 55 seconds to play in the half and Brett Johnson converted a lay up to trim the UT Arlington lead to 42-36 at halftime.

The Mavs broke open a 26-26 tie with a 12-2 run over a 5:02 span late in the first half. A pair of Terrell Henry free throws swelled the lead to 38-28 with 1:53 to play.

UT Arlington broke down the Angelo State defense for 34 points off lay ups or dunks in the game. The Mavs made 56.3 percent (18 of 32) from the field in the second half.

For the second straight game, UT Arlington proved to be tough on the boards outrebounding ASU 51-36.
