HOUSTON, Texas - Texas Southern forward Jacques Jones scored 17 of his team-high 26 points in the first half to lead the Tigers to a 95-81 win over UT Arlington at the H&PE Arena Wednesday night.
Texas Southern improves to 3-6 while UT Arlington falls to 4-6 overall and 1-5 on their season-long six-game road trip.
Ro'ger Guignard canned five 3-pointers to lead the Mavs with a career-high 19 points. Larry Posey chipped in 14 and Jermaine Griffin added 10. For the Tigers, Sollie Norwood had 21 points and Dominique White and Chris Moore canned 13 each.
TSU made 52.5% (32 of 61) from the field while holding UTA to 35.1% (26 of 74).
Texas Southern used a 14-4 run to begin the second half to swelled a 10-point halftime lead to 20, 59-39, after two Norwood free throws with 14:03 to play in the game.
The Mavs made a run of their own with an 18-7 run over the next 5:00 to cut the lead to 68-59 after a Griffin basket with 7:47 to play.
The Mavs got as close as eight, 77-69, after a basket by Posey and a 3-pointer from Brandon Long with 3:52 left in the game, but the Tigers made 12 of 15 free throws in the final 3:00 to seal the win.
The 6-foot-7 Jones dominated the game early with his inside and outside game scoring 12 of the Tigers' first 20 points as TSU built a 20-15 lead after a Jones basket off a steal with 11:42 to play in the first half.
UT Arlington battled back with an 11-0 run to take the lead, 26-20 after a Jermaine Griffin bank shot with 7:57 in the half. But the Mavs managed just three field goals the final seven minutes of the half and TSU outscored the Mavs 26-9 to take a 45-35 halftime lead.
UT Arlington returns to Texas Hall Dec. 30 to host UT-Dallas at 4 p.m.
