MAVERICKS NIP LAMAR, 75-73

Feb. 18, 2006

Final Stats

ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior Jarrett Howell made two free-throws with eight seconds to go and sophomore Larry Posey picked up a huge charge to push Texas-Arlington past Lamar, 75-73, Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall.

Down 73-71, with just over a minute to go, Texas-Arlington (12-13, 5-7 SLC) Posey stepped to the line and calmly knocked down two free-throws to tie the game with 40 seconds. Lamar (14-11, 7-5 SLC) ran the shot clock down and as Alan Daniels dribble the ball near the sideline, Howell was there to steal the ball and pick up a foul on Daniels.

"The free-throw line is where I make my money," Howell said. "This was a huge game and we finally won a close game."

After Howell's two made free-throws, Lamar's Matthew Barrow drove the lane in the closing seconds, but Posey was there to pick up the biggest charge of the season.

Senior Steven Thomas led the Mavericks with 15 points to go along with his seven rebounds, while Posey finished with nine points nine rebounds. The Mavericks three-guard combo in Howell (13 points, four assists), senior Brady Dawkins (11 points, four assists) and sophomore Rodrick Epps (13 points, five assists) had a very productive night, starting together for the fourth straight game.

Daniels led all scorers with 22 points but tallied five turnovers. Thomas Fairley added 15 points and eight rebounds, to go along with his four blocks. Barrow registered 18 points and three assists.

"If we play the way we did in the second half, we can play with anybody," head coach Eddie McCarter said. "They were doing a good job penetrating in the first half, but we cut that out down the stretch and kept them outside."

The Mavericks will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Nicholls State. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. at Stopher Gymnasium. Texas-Arlington defeated the Colonels, 82-54, at Texas Hall earlier this season.
