PLANO, Texas - UTSA's Brittany Cantu and Jill Garro of Texas-Arlington have been named the Aeropostale/Southland Conference Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their performances last week as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Cantu batted .667 in a three-game sweep of Southeastern Louisiana, going 6-for-9 with four runs, three home runs, nine runs batted in, one walk, a 1.667 slugging percentage and a .700 on-base percentage. In a pair of 8-0 victories in a Saturday doubleheader, Cantu had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI. She wrapped up the series with a 4-for-4, five-RBI performance on Sunday in a 17-4 win. Cantu launched two home runs, including a mammoth grand slam into the trees in center field, in an 11-run second inning, as UTSA improved to 7-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference. She is now hitting .368 with 14 hits, including a team-best eight home runs, 18 RBI in 13 games this year.
This marks the third time a Roadrunner has been honored by the league as senior Mel Torres and junior Ursula Mares swept Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 14.
Garro went 2-1 last week, including a sweep of McNeese State Saturday. The Bulverde, Texas tossed 11-inning, complete-game decision in 5-4 win and then followed with two innings of relief in 7-6 victory over the Cowgirls. The senior struck out 18 batters over three games.
Players of the week voting consists of softball sports information directors and is release by the league office each Tuesday.
