WACO, Texas - Sophomore Michael Cast did not need long to punch his ticket to the NCAA Regionals.
Competing in his first meet of the outdoor season, Cast set a personal-best toss of 203-feet, 11-inches to claim second place at the Dr Pepper Invitation, but more importantly, reserve his seat for a trip to the NCAAs.
Cast' effort highlighted a busy day for the Mavericks that saw personal best times fall and efforts that rank near the top of the Southland Conference rankings. He is the first javelin thrower to qualify for the NCAAs since current throws coach Wayne Cunnings did in 1988.
"We had some individuals show that they worked hard during the spring break and the last month since the indoor season," said UTA Track and Field Head Coach John Sauerhage. "I am happy with the effort of a number of athletes and we will try and build off this meet and be ready for the conference meet."
