ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT-Arlington offense pushed across six runs in the first two innings and it was more than enough as Ryan Martin earned his first collegiate victory in relief as the Mavs defeated Hawai'i-Hilo 6-3 Tuesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Martin (1-1) picked up the victory as he allowed one run on six hits in six innings of relief. He struck out two and walked one while throwing 84 pitches.
The Mavs (17-22) got the offense going immediately as Daniel Rieder drew a leadoff walk and scored when Danny Slinkman reached on an error and the right fielder threw the ball away for the second error on the play. Adam Moore plated Slinkman with a single to left field. With one out, Robby Winn ripped an RBI double into the gap in left center. Kyle Rudy drove in the fourth run of the inning with a double just inside the bag at third.
The Vulcans (15-30) got a run back in the second as they loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a walk. Chris Campbell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left center.
UTA added a pair of runs in the second as Rieder singled through the left side and scored on Moore's double just inside the left-field line. Ben Burum drove in Moore with a single back through the box.
UHH got a run in the eighth as A.J. Satele delivered a two-out RBI single to center field.
The Vulcans made the game interesting as they loaded the bases with one out against UTA closer Chris Taylor. After a run scored on a walk, Taylor struck out the next two hitters to end the game.
Ryan Olszewski (2-6) took the loss as he allowed six runs, four earned, on hits in the complete game.
Moore and Rudy collected two hits apiece, while Moore drove in two and scored a pair of runs.
The Mavs and Vulcans will play the second game of the series tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
