DES MOINES, Iowa - UT Arlington's sprint relay team of Quinchun Carey, Coby Morrison, Byron Majors and Jared Connaughton clocked a time of 40.84 seconds to advance to Saturday's finals during competition at the prestigeous Drake Relays here.
The 40.84 time was the seventh fastest time in the prelims and took third in Heat 2 of the qualifiers.
Morrison, a junior from Wichita Falls, Texas, finished sixth in the men's 400-meter hurdles with an NCAA region-qualifying time of time of 51.52. Teammate Jon McDowell clocked a 53.89 in the competition.
The men's 4x200-meter relay squad of Connuaghton, Carey, Morrison and Majors finished third with a time of 1:25.38. Florida (1:23.48) won the race with Illinois (1:23.82) seconds.
Today, the UTA Shuttle Hurdle Relay will defend their Drake Relays title. The Mavericks have won this event two of the past thee years.
Carey cleared 24-01.75 (7.36m) in the long jump for a 12th-place finish.
Senior pole vault Shay Collett matched his season-best height of 5.20 meters (17-00.75) to take second place at the prestigeous Drake Relays here Friday afternoon.
Collett, the school-record holder, finished second to Wisconsin-LaCrosse's Matt Novak who cleared 5.30 meters (17-04.50).
Saturday, the distance runners will compete at the Rice Twilight Meet in Houston. Among those expected to compete are sophomore Jodi Hulett and senior Heather Isbell.
