ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington catcher Adam Moore was named the 2006 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year and four other Mavericks were named to the All-SLC teams released by the conference office Monday. Second baseman Daniel Rieder and designated hitter Ben Burum were named to the third team and first baseman Robby Winn and pitcher Dillon Gee honorable mention.
Moore, (Mineola, Texas) became the first Maverick catcher to earn first team all-conference honors since Kyle Heine in 1998. He is the school's fifth Newcomer of the Year, ranked in the top 10 in nearly every offensive category as he hit .357 with 80 hits, 20 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 46 RBIs and 51 runs scored. He walked 29 times, including a school-record seven intentional walks, while also shattering the record books by being hit by 13 pitches.
Rieder (Chilliwack, British Columbia) earned third team honors after hitting .325 with 76 hits, 11 doubles, three home runs and 29 RBIs out of the leadoff spot. He is third on the team in average, second in hits, second in doubles and second in walks (28).
Burum (Arlington, Texas) earned third team honors after turning his season completely around in April. After starting the season 1-for-32 (.031), the junior went on a tear and is hitting .392 (29-for-74) since April 14. On the season, he is hitting .283 with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 21 RBIs.
Winn (Keller, Texas) was named honorable mention despite hitting .418 in conference play and hitting 23 points higher than any other player. He is hitting .332 with nine doubles, three home runs and 34 RBIs in 51 games this season. He enters the conference tournament on a 20-game hit streak and has hit safely in 36 of the last 39 games.
Gee (Cleburne, Texas) earned honorable mention honors for the second straight season after going 6-8 with a 5.10 ERA and one save. He leads the team with 100.2 innings and three complete games and is second with 65 strikeouts. He is coming off his best outing of the season in which he struck out 11 in nine innings against Dallas Baptist.
The Mavs open up the SLC Tournament on May 24 as they take on Texas State at 3 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont.
