AUSTIN, Texas - North Carolina State center fielder Matt Camp's RBI bunt base hit in the top of the 10th inning capped off the Wolfpack comeback as Texas-Arlington failed to score on two golden opportunities in the eighth and ninth innings in being eliminated, 6-5, from the Austin Regional.
Marcus Jones started the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After tagging up on a fly out to left field, Jones was able to score on the push bunt from Camp.
NCST (39-22) broke through in the second inning as they took advantage of a couple walks and a costly throwing error to push across three runs. Jon Still walked and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Brian Aragon's double just inside the bag at first. Aragon was thrown out after taking a wide turn at second and was followed by two hits and a walk to load the bases. Two more runs scored as a high chopper to second was thrown away into the Wolfpack dugout.
UTA (29-36) got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Robby Winn hit his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall for a solo shot.
Ben Burum started the fifth inning with a single up the middle and Danny Slinkman followed with a base on balls. After a fielder's choice retired the lead runner, Kyle Rudy loaded the bases with his second single to left field. After fall ling behind in the count, Collin Garner battled back and sliced the bases-clearing double just inside the left field line to give UTA its first lead of the game. Daniel Rieder followed with an RBI single to right center.
The Wolfpack got a run back in the seventh inning as Aaron Bates doubled to right center and scored on Aragon's two-out bloop single just over the head of the second baseman.
NCST tied the game in the eighth as a pair of base hits started the inning before the Mavs turned a 2-6-3 double play on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Camp quickly hushed the UTA crowd with an RBI single to left field.
UTA had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the eighth as back-to-back singles from David McLeod and Adam Moore put runners on the corners with no outs. A grounder back to the pitcher retired the runner at the plate and a balk moved runners to second and third. A weak groundout to second on a drawn-in infield and a flyout to right ended the rally.
The Mavs found themselves in the same situation in the ninth inning as they had runners on the corners with no outs. After a groundout advanced the runner to second, Rieder was intentionally walked to load the bases. McLeod followed with a hard-hit 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Brandon Endsley (1-4) took the loss after giving up one run on one hit in 1.1 innings. Joel Brookens (1-1) picked up the victory by striking out two and not allowing a hit over 1.2 innings.
Rudy joined Garner with a team-high three hits.Garner also drove in three runs.
