NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin showed why they were the preseason favorite to win the Southland Conference as they won their 38th straight conference match by handing UT Arlington a 21-30, 18-30, 23-30 defeat Friday evening at the Johnson Coliseum.
The two teams started the match by exchanging blows and battling to a 10-10 tie. SFA would score the next three points and never relinquish the lead. UTA would fall behind by six points before rattling off a pair of points. The Ladyjacks scored the final four points of the game.
SFA (12-3, 3-0 SLC) used that momentum to run away with the second game. UTA got a spark off the bench from Liz Curry as she recorded three kills on seven swings.
The Mavs (12-6, 1-1 SLC) quickly dug themselves a huge deficit in the third game as a kill by JJ Jones gave the Jacks a 10-3 advantage. UTA would get kills from Dani Johnson, Torie Dacus and Curry to pull within five before SFA pulled away for the victory.
Dacus led the Mavs offense with nine kills and Curry added six. Ashley Smith recorded a team-high 25 digs and Dacus added 15. Traci Rohde led the Jacks with 16 kills and Lauren Railey added 11 kills and 24 digs.
The Mavs return to action tomorrow evening as they take on Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. in Huntsville.
