VOLLEYBALL WINS FIVE GAME THRILLER AT CORPUS CHRISTI

CORPUS CHRISTI - UT Arlington volleyball fought back after dropping the first two games to win 3-2 at Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday. The Mavs improve to 12-7 on the season and 5-1 in Southland Conference action, while the Islanders drop to 4-15, 1-5.

Senior Torie Dacus led the offense with 18 kills for a .304 hitting percentage while outside hitter Teena Sobczak led the defense with a season high 25 digs.

The Mavs and Islanders traded points early in game one before UTA pulled ahead 9-6 behind the blocking of seniors Emily Nedderman and Ellen Murray. The Islanders came back to tie the score 21-21 before winning the next point for their first lead of the game. From their TAMUCC went on an 8-1 run to win game one 30-23.

In game two, the Islanders jumped out to a 9-5 lead before the Mavs pulled even at 11. UTA put together a 4-0 run for the 15-11 advantage. Corpus Christi went on an 8-1 run of their own to lead 19-16. Setter Raegan Daniel sparked a 3-1 Maverick run to tie the score 20-20. Behind a pair of kills from Kasey McBrearty and Amber Benjamin, the Islanders pulled away with the 30-26 win to lead the match 2-0.

The two teams matched points early in game three before the Mavs went on a 12-5 run for the seven point advantage (20-13) forcing the Islanders to burn a timeout. Behind an ace from Dacus and a big block from Nedderman and Murray, the Mavs took their biggest lead of the match at 11 (24-13). The Islanders went on a 7-2 run to get within six and forced UTA to use a time out. Both teams had a chance at game point, but the Mavs pulled out the win 33-31.

Libero Dani Johnson served five straight points to give UT Arlington to an early 8-1 advantage in game four. Molly McCabe had a service ace to cap an Islander 13-6 run to knot the score 14 all. The Mavericks answered with an 11-4 run for the 25-18 lead forcing a Corpus Christi timeout. Bianca Sauls put down the game winning kill 30-26 to force a game five.

In only the third five game match of the Mavericks season, the Islanders matched UTA early point-for-point. The Mavs put together a 6-1 run for the 13-8 advantage. Murray and Nedderman put up a huge block to give UTA the 15-10 win.

The Mavs will continue their SLC road swing on Saturday at UTSA. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
