ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington volleyball dropped its first Southland Conference match of the season to Stephen F. Austin 0-3 (23-30, 28-30, 21-30) on Thursday. The Mavs fall to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in the SLC while the Ladyjacks improve to 15-5 and 5-0.
The Ladyjacks took the advantage early in game one, but the Mavs battled back to tie it 18-18 and then took the one-point lead with a kill from Teena Sobczak. From there, SFA used a 13-4 run to win 30-23.
UTA jumped out to the 4-1 lead in game two before SFA went on a 3-0 run to knot it up 4-4. Behind strong blocking and an ace from Ellen Murray, the Mavs went on an 8-3 run to extend it lead to five (12-7). A service ace from setter Emily Nedderman gave UTA a 15-10 advantage. SFA began to close the gap and knotted the score at 26-all before closing the game with a 4-2 run to take the two-game lead heading into the break.
In game three the two teams matched points until an ace by Dani Johnson sparked a 7-2 Maverick run to lead 13-8, forcing a Ladyjack timeout. From there SFA began to inch closer eventually taking the lead 22-20 and forcing the Mavs to burn a timeout. The Ladyjacks came out of the huddle and went on a 8-1 run to seal the game and match 30-21.
The Mavs will look to rebound on Saturday as they welcome Sam Houston State to Texas Hall at 4 p.m.
