TURTLE BAY, Hawai'i - The UT Arlington Mavericks continued their record-breaking fall by clipping their record for lowest single-round score with an 18-under-par 270 to sit in a third-place tie after the opening round of the 2007 Turtle Bay Intercollegiate here Monday afternoon.
UT Arlington's 270 score shattered the old mark of 275 set two weeks ago in the final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
Defending SEC champion, Tennessee, leads the tournament by six strokes at 264. College of Charleston fired a 20-under 268 for second place. UT Arlington, UC Irvine and 14th-ranked Pepperdine are tied for third at 270.
Texas, UNLV and Saint Mary's (Calif.) are tied for sixth at 273. Baylor (274) is one shot back in ninth place. Loyola Marymount and New Mexico State are tied for 10th at 275.
Boise State (276), UNC-Wilmington (278), Idaho (180), Hawai'i (283), UC Riverside (283), Weber State (283), Wyoming (285), San Diego (287), San Francisco (288), and Osaka Gakuin (297) round out the 21-team field.
"Can't say enough about how Bobby Massa attacked the golf course," said UT Arlington Head Golf Coach Jay Rees. "We still have room to get better. Overall it was a great day. We are competing against some highly-ranked national programs and we have to find a away to get better tomorrow."
The tournament was a day for low scores. After heavy rains on Sunday, the tournament was held on the 6,535-yard Fazio course. Fazio was forgiving as 20 of the 21 teams shot even-par or better on Monday,
Seventh-two of the 110 competitors shot under-par scores between light rain showers at the Turtle Bay Resort.
UT Arlington's Bobby Massa shot a six-under-par 30 on his first nine holes of the day and finished at eight-under-par 64. The score was the second lowest in school history, just one stroke off the school mark of 63 shot by Shad Muth at the UTSA Invitational in 2001.
Senior Zack Reeves is tied for fourth with a 65 while sophomore Michael van de Venter is tied for 16th at 67.
Both Michael Douthit and Bryce Easton shot first-day scores of two-over-par 74.
Tennessee's Robin Wingardh leads the tournament with a sparkling nine-under-par 63.
