TURTLE BAY, Hawai'i - - UT Arlington sophomore Bryce Easton had a bad day on Monday.
Easton had six birdies during the opening round. However, two double bogeys and a scorecard error where he made a birdie on the par-5, No. 17 but had par written on the scorecard when he turned it in led to a 74.
Easton made amends for Monday's miscues with a sparkling 67 to lead the Mavericks to a seven-under-par 281 and sole possession of third place after the second day of the 2007 Turtle Bay Intercollegiate Tournament here Tuesday.
UT Arlington will join leader Tennessee and UC Irvine for the final groups of the day Wednesday. The tournament will switch back to the scoring friendly Fazio course where UT Arlington set a school record 270 on Monday.
Easton shot a four-under-par 32 on the back nine, including three straight birdies on holes 12, 13 and 14. He also birdied the par-4 17th hole to go to five under par.
"Bryce bounced back and had a big day," said UT Arlington Head Golf Coach Jay Rees following the round. "The rest of the guys stayed around par. I thought we had a very good score considering we have never played the course. Tomorrow will be a shoot out and there will be a lot of low scores."
Sophomore Bobby Massa carded his fifth straight under-par round this fall with a one-under 71 on the 7,218-yard, par-72 Palmer course.
Zack Reeves also carded a 71 to sit at eight-under-par 136. Michael van de Venter was two=under-par during Tuesday's round but settled for a 72 and stands at five-under-par 139 after 36 holes. Michael Douthit had a 76 on Tuesday after an opening day 74.
Tennessee used a course-record tying 64 by Charlie Ford to shot the low round of the day - a 13-under-par 275 to build an 11-shot lead over UC Irvine (550) and 12 strokes better than UTA (551). Ford's round matched the 64 shot by Fred Funk during a Champions Tour event played here in 2006.
