HOUSTON, Texas - UT Arlington (2-3) softball recovered from yesterday's losses to win its final contest of the Wilson DeMarini Invitational, 8-2 over Mississippi (1-4). Senior Dee Jay Nelson led the charge going 2-for-3 which included her second home run of the season.
Mavs starter freshman Cara Hulme (2-1) and reliever freshman Heather Fortenberry combined for two runs allowed on five hits and three strikeouts.
UTA got on the board first when Nelson sent a two-run home run over the centerfield wall to put the Rebels in a 2-0 hole in the first inning.
The Mavs extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third with a RBI single by senior Courtni Anderson and a RBI double by April Clougherty down the right field line.
Ole Miss made it 4-2 in the fourth when Lauren Rowe hit a solo shot and Emily Sarver singled through the right side to score Alyssa McGovern from second.
Maverick relief pitcher Fortenberry's three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth sealed the win and gave UTA a 7-2 advantage. Centerfielder Kristin Moore's sixth-inning long ball pushed the final margin to six runs.
UTA will return to action next weekend when it travels to the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.
