UT Arlington searches for its fifth straight win when the Mavericks host Texas-San Antonio Thursday at Texas Hall.
UT Arlington has won five of its past six games, including a 52 -46 win at McNeese State last Saturday. The 46 points were the fewest allowed by the Mavs since a 74-46 win over Nicholls State on Feb. 15, 2003.
UTA has vaulted into sixth place in the SLC after wins over Sam Houston State, Texas State, Lamar and McNeese State. The top two teams from each division and the teams with the next four best Conference records advance to the O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament, March 8-11 at the Campbell Center in Aldine, Texas.
The Mavs have started three freshmen - Matt Read, Cardell Hunter and Ro'ger Guignard - during their current four-game winning streak.
Guignard is making a strong case for Southland Conference freshman of the year honors. The Mesquite native leads the league's freshmen with 10.6 points per game. He could become the first Maverick to average in double figures as a freshman since Bill Washington in 1996-97. His 60 3-pointers are 16th on the UTA single-season list.
Junior center Jermaine Griffin ranks 10th nationally and leads the Southland Conference in field-goal percentage with 64.0% (142-222) and 44th in blocked shots with 2.0 per game. His 49 blocks is a single-season record at UTA, breaking the old mark of 43 by Paul Renfro in 1979-80. Sophomore forward Anthony Vereen is making 69.4% from the field (34-of-49) in SLC play.
