LAS CRUCES, N.M. - UT Arlington softball won its opening game of the Troy Cox Classic 4-3 over Buffalo in Las Cruces, N.M. Junior Amanda Swofford led the Mavs going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Mary Russell got the Bulls (0-2) on the board in the bottom of the first after reaching on an error and eventually scoring on a Maverick error after stealing third base. Buffalo then extended its lead in the bottom of the second 2-0, as Sharon Barr hit homer over the left field fence.
The Mavericks pulled ahead one run in the top of the third, to lead 3-2. Kristin Moore walked then advanced to third on a double from Katie Jones. Swofford reached on a Buffalo error which allowed Moore and Jones to score. Dee Jay Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Swofford.
Buffalo was able to ink another run in the bottom of the fifth to even the score 3-3. Samantha Gaetano hit a single and then stole second, ultimately scoring on a Colleen Greene RBI-single to center field. The lead would not stand, though, as UTA scored its winning run in the top of the sixth. April Clougherty doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball followed by a Swofford singled to drive in the winning run.
Freshman Casey Clifton recorded her first collegiate win in two innings of relief to move the Mavs to 3-3 on the season.
UTA will close out day one at the Troy Cox Classic at 8 p.m. when it faces off with UT El Paso. The Mavs will continue action is Las Cruces on Saturday as it is scheduled to meet Central Michigan at 10 a.m. followed by a 5:30 p.m. first pitch with host New Mexico State.
