LAS CRUCES, N.M. - UT Arlington softball romped Central Michigan, 12-1, in the second day of action at the Troy Cox Classic hosted by New Mexico State.
The win improved UTA's record to 5-3, while the loss dropped Central Michigan to 0-3. Maverick freshman pitcher Heather Fortenberry (1-0) tossed her first complete game. In five innings of work, she surrendered two hits as she struck out ten Chippewas.
UTA left fielder Katie Jones powered the Mavericks with a 3-for-4 performance that included two home runs, two RBI and a pair of runs.
Six Mavericks had at least one RBI in UTA's winning cause. Center fielder April Clougherty and Fortenberry combined for six of the Mavs 12 RBI, while first baseman Dee Jay Nelson scored three of UTA's 12 runs.
Jones got the Mavs rolling in the first with her first home run of the day. She was followed across the plate by Amanda Swofford, Samantha Chumchal, Nelson, Courtney Anderson and Fortenberry for the 6-0 lead.
The Mavs added a trio of runs to the scoreboard in the second frame to lead 9-0 heading into the third. CMU scored its lone run at the top of the third on a double from Jacque Benedict. UTA scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third and added a single run in the fourth to reach 12.
UTA will conclude its second day of action at the Troy Cox Classic when it takes on host New Mexico State at 5:30 p.m.
