HOUSTON, Texas - UT Arlington senior Jared Connaughton defended his conference crown winning the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.68 seconds as the Mavericks claimed second place in the team standings at the 2007 Southland Conference Indoor Track Championships at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse here Saturday afternoon.
Connaughton, the 2006 SLC Athlete of the Year, helped the Mavs roll up 98 points, 16.5 points less than UT-San Antonio who defended their team title from a year ago. He and senior Coby Morrison gave the Mavs a 1-2 finish in the 200 meters. Morrison finished behind Connaughton with a time 21.92.
Connaughton also finished second to Northwestern State's Ravyn Hayward in the 60 meters with a 6.79. Connaughton also anchored the 4x400-meter relay that earned all-SLC honors with a third-place finish with a time of 3:18.64.
The Mavs' Distance Medley Relay of Idilio Campos, Aron Morgan, Zach Davis and Ozie Hood also earned all-conference honors with third place after a time of 10:13.39
Davis missed on a chance at a second all-SLC honor after being disqualified in the 800 meters when he was ruled to have obstructed a runner in a photo finish. Davis was in third place before the ruling knocked him out of the standings.
Campos earned all-SLC honors in the mile run after a time of 4:17.69 gave him third place. Ozie Hood took sixth place with a 4:18.98.
Senior Koby Styles, who set a new school record in the 5,000-meter run on Friday night, was in third place in the 3,000 meters before fading in the final laps to claim eighth place.
Senior Jon McDowell took fourth place in the 60-meter hurdles with a 8.10 while teammate Timothy Thompson was seventh with an 8.26.
Transfer Eddie Beckwith scored in the 400 meters with a 50.16.
