UT Arlington searches for its sixth straight win when the Mavericks travel to league-leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a televised game on FOX Sports.
UT Arlington has won six of its past seven games, including an 81-52 win versus UTSA Thursday at Texas Hall. The Mavs are outscoring the opponent 85-67 during the win streak.
UTA has vaulted into sixth place in the SLC after its current five-game win streak. The top two teams from each division and the teams with the next four best Conference records advance to the O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament, March 8-11 at the Campbell Center in Aldine, Texas.
The Mavs have started three freshmen - Matt Read, Cardell Hunter and Ro'ger Guignard - during their current five-game winning streak. Guignard is making a strong case for Southland Conference freshman of the year honors. The Mesquite native leads the league's freshmen with 10.6 points per game. He could become the first Maverick to average in double figures as a freshman since Bill Washington in 1996-97. His 62 3-pointers are 12th on the UTA single-season list.
Junior center Jermaine Griffin ranks 10th nationally and leads the Southland Conference in field-goal percentage with 63.7% (144-226) and 44th in blocked shots with 2.0 per game. His 52 blocks is a single-season record at UTA, breaking the old mark of 43 by Paul Renfro in 1979-80.
Sophomore forward Anthony Vereen is making 63.8% from the field (37-of-58) in SLC play.
