UT Arlington looks to get back into the Southland Conference Postseason Tournament picture as they travel to Texas State for a key match up at Strahan Coliseum.
The Mavericks could move to within a half game of sixth place in the league standings, trailing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston Stephen F. Austin in the West Division and Northwestern State, SE Louisiana, Lamar and McNeese State in the East Division. The top eight teams advance to the SLC Postseason Tournament, March 8-11, at the Campbell Center in Aldine.
UT Arlington is 1-2 against the West Division this season, including a 78-65 win over Sam Houston.
Freshman Ro'ger Guignard is making a strong case for Southland Conference freshman of the year honors. The Mesquite native leads the league's freshmen with 10.1 points per game. He could become the first Maverick to average in double figures as a freshman since Bill Washington in 1996-97.
Junior center Jermaine Griffin ranks 11th nationally in field-goal percentage with 64.0% (121-189) from the field this season.
UT Arlington is coming off their most impressive win of the season - a 105-63 decision over Austin College. Seven players score in double figures. Freshman center Matt Read made his first start of the season and scored a career high 11 points and added five rebounds in 22 minutes of action.
The Mavs have not won two games together since the season opening 87-59 win over Texas-Tyler and an 83-81 win at North Texas. UT Arlington returns to Texas Hall Thursday to face with Lamar at 7 p.m.
