SHREVEPORT, La. - Three home runs help Mavs win 8-0 in five innings over Centenary College on Wednesday. UT Arlington softball won its tenth straight game on the season to improve its record to 28-11.
Freshman Heather Fortenberry picked up the complete game win, improving her record to 12-1 on the season for a team leading 2.40 ERA. In five innings of work, Fortenberry gave up only two hits while striking out five.
After two scoreless innings, the Mavs jumped on the board in the top of the third. With one out center fielder, April Clougherty hit a single and advanced to third on a double to right center from Courtney Anderson placing both runners in scoring position. Then senior Dee Jay Nelson hit a single to right center to plate Clougherty and Anderson for the 2-0 lead.
Shortstop Amanda Swofford kicked off the fourth inning by drawing a walk and scored on designated player Amanda Brown's third career home run in as many games. Left fielder Katie Jones drove UTA's lead to six with her 12th home run of the season scoring Courtni Anderson who reached on a single down the left field line.
Fortenberry helped to end the game in the fifth inning with her seventh home run of the season driving in pinch runner Casey Clifton for the 8-0 lead. Centenary failed to score any runs in the bottom half of the inning giving UTA the win.
The Mavs will have a week off before they welcome Tulsa to Allen Saxe Field for a mid- week non-conference double-header. The first game is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Wed. April 18.
