FRISCO, Texas - UT Arlington sophomore forward Anthony Vereen was named to the 2007 Southland Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic First Team while teammates Brandon Long and Cardell Hunter were named to the honorable mention list, it was announced recently.
Vereen averaged 11.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for the Mavericks this season. He started 20 of 30 games this season and led the squad in free-throw percentage (82.%) and was second in field-goal percentage (59.6%). He maintained a 3.25 grade-point-average.
Joining Vereen on the first-team squad was , Kurt Attaway for Texas-San Antonio, Jejuan Plair, Aaron Wade and Ryan Bright, all from Sam Houston State. Bright was named the student-athlete of the year.
The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA to go along with superior athletic achievement.
Hunter, a redshirt freshman from Dallas, started nine games during the season and helped the Mavs go on a five-game winning streak during the conference season. He averaged 3.4 points and was third on the squad with 44 assists. He maintains a 3.19 GPA.
Long overcame an early season injury to start eight games. He averaged 8.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 26 points in the Mavs 110-103 win at Texas State on Feb. 3. Long maintains a 3.02 GPA.
