HOUSTON, Texas - Houston outside hitter Justine Farmer recorded 25 kills and 17 digs to lead the Cougars to a 30-23, 30-24, 30-18 sweep over UT Arlington Friday evening at the Athletics/Alumni Center
The Cougars (1-0) looked to be the more seasoned team in the opening game as they were able to go on a 6-1 run midway through the opening game to take a 21-16 advantage. UTA tried to make a late run on a pair of kills from Torie Dacus, but UH quickly ended any hopes with a pair of kills from Lucy Charuk to take the game 30-23.
UTA (0-1) came out stronger in the second game and got back-to-back kills from Emily Nedderman and Teena Sobczak, followed by a block from Nedderman and Gina Kalb to take an 11-10 advantage. The Cougars would respond by getting a kill and a block to take a slim lead they would not relinquish. Farmer would push the pace for the Cougars as she had five of her game-high 10 kills down the stretch to push UH to the 30-24 victory.
The third game followed the same as the first two as UTA stayed close through the early part of the game before the Cougars went on an 8-2 run to seize control of the game and the match.
Dacus led the Mavs with 10 kills and 11 digs.
The Mavs return to the court on Feb. 28 as they welcome Louisiana Tech to Texas Hall for the 2007 home opener. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
