CONNAUGHTON TO COMPETE AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Aug. 7, 2007

OTTAWA, Ontario - Fresh off a silver medal at the 2007 Pan-Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, former UT Arlington track standout Jared Connaughton is one of six athletes named to the Canadian men's 4x100-meter relay team for the 2007 World Championships to be held Aug. 25-Sept. 2 in Osaka, Japan.

Connaughton, a native of New Haven PEI, was named to the team after running the third leg of the 4x100-meter relay team that clocked a time of 38.87 to finish second behind Brazil (38.81) and just ahead of the United States (38.88). Connaughton and his teammates posted the fastest qualifying time of 38.83.

Just a few days earlier in Brazil, Connaughton ran a 20.90 in the opening round of the 200 meters to advance to the semifinals. Connaughton would run a 20.86 in the semifinals, but was nudged out of the finals by four-hundreths of a second.

Connaughton was an 11-time all-Southland Conference performer from 2005-07 and holds the school indoor record with a time of 6.68 in the 60-meter dash. He was named the SLC Athlete of the Year and the Outstanding Track Performer during the 2006 outdoor season.

Connaughton closed out his UTA career by capturing the SLC Outdoor 200-meter championship with a time of 20.76 and leading the team to its first outdoor conference championship since 1997. He also teamed with Byron Majors, Coby Morrison and Adam Newton on the 4x100-meter relay team that advanced to the NCAA Championships with a time of 39.65, the third fastest in school history.
