FORT WORTH, Texas - Reigning Southland Conference hitter of the week Teena Sboczak recorded a match-high 23 kills, but it was not enough as UT Arlington let the match slip away in falling 27-30, 30-22, 27-30, 27-30 to TCU Wednesday evening in Fort Worth.
"The match was given away in game one," said head coach Diane Seymour. "I think we had the opportunity to take control of this match in game one. We bounced back in game two and then it was kind of a roller-coaster ride in games three and four. We never really played very consistently. Hopefully this weekend will be a little more consistent."
Sobczak added 17 kills to lead three players with double-doubles. Torie Dacus added 15 kills and 16 digs and Bianca Sauls chipped in 13 kills and 13 digs.
Senior libero Dani Johnson recorded a team-high 19 kills to become the 15th player in UTA history to eclipse the 1,000-dig plateau.
The Mavs (4-2) seemed to gain control of a tight opening game as a Sauls kill from the back row sparked a 5-0 run that gave UTA a 16-12 advantage. TCU continued to battle and took a 20-19 lead on a Maverick hitting error.
The two teams would exchange points the remainder of the game until the Horned Frogs got kills from LeMeita Smith and Kourtney Edwards to setup game point for the duo to deliver the game-ending block.
The second game was a completely different story as the Mavs dominated from the opening serve and raced to a commanding 17-9 advantage behind the right arm of Sobczak who delivered eight kills in the game. The Frogs made a late run to pull within five, but kills from Emily Nedderman and Sobczak set up Sobczak's game-ending ace in the 30-22 victory.
The Frogs (6-1) regained the momentum at the start of the third game as they stormed to 6-1 advantage. UTA battled back to tie the score 15-15 before taking their first lead of the game at 23-22 on a kill from Sobczak. That would serve as the only lead of the game as TCU came out of a timeout with four straight points. The Mavs pulled to within two on two occasions, but never able to get closer in falling 27-30.
The Mavs return to the court this weekend as they participate in the Middle Tennessee Blue Raider Bash on Sept. 8-9.
