BELMONT HITS THROUGH MAVS IN FOUR GAMES

Sept. 7, 2007

Box Score

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Cat Mundy recorded a match-high 19 kills as the Belmont Bruins hit .348 in handing UT Arlington a 32-30, 22-30, 25-30, 14-30 defeat Friday afternoon at the Middle Tennessee Blue Raider Bash.

"We never caught up to the speed of their game," said head coach Diane Seymour. "They train very well, obviously, and they play at a speed that we don't see very often. We just couldn't adapt at all."

The Mavs (5-3) got off to their characteristic slow start as they fell behind 16-12 on two straight kills from Mundy. UTA would make a run behind kills from Ellen Murray, Gina Kalb and Sauls, along with a service ace from Dani Johnson to pull within one at 20-19.

The Bruins (6-3) would then gain the momentum again as a Mundy ace made the score 26-22. UTA had one more run left as they fought off two game points and tied the score on a Murray kill before using a Bianca Sauls ace to set up their own game point and end things with a Teena Sobczak kill.

BU took control of the second game from the first point as a kill from Colleen Nilson gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish. UTA would be forced to play catch up the entire game and were never able to get closer that four points in falling 30-22.

The Mavs had a better start to the third game as they remained close until the Bruins took advantage of two-straight Maverick hitting errors to open a 23-17 advantage. Unlike the first game, the Mavs did not have that final push as they were only able to pull within three before Mundy delivered two kills to end the game at 30-25.

UTA looked like a tired team in the fourth game as they held an early 2-1 lead before the Bruins rattled 13 of the next 18 points to take a commanding lead. BU would continue the offensive onslot in handing the Mavs their worst game loss of the season.

Torie Dacus led the Mavs with 13 kills and 13 digs, while Sobczak added 14 kills and 11 digs.

The Mavs return to the court tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. against #25 Middle Tennessee State.
