Fort Worth, Texas - A quiet second half for the Mavs led to a 70-45 loss over Mountain West Conference opponent-TCU at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum Thursday night.
With the loss, UTA fell to 1-1 on the season while the Lady Frogs improved to 3-0 overall.
The Mavericks opened the first half with a feed down low to senior Candice Champion and a Meghan Nelson layup, making the score 4-0 at the 17:05 mark. Helen Sverrisdottir put TCU on the board with two free throws with 16:50 left in the first half.
An 8-2 run by the Mavs led to a 16-11 advantage over TCU with 7:54 left on the clock. The Lady Frogs quickly cut UTA's lead by three following a jumper by Sverrisdottir.
A three pointer by Rachel Rentschler sparked a 12-0 run for the Lady Frogs, as they headed into the locker rooms with a 29-21 advantage.
UTA finished the first half shooting 25.7 percent (9-of-35) from the field to TCU's 24.3 percent (9-of-37) from the floor.
"We shot poorly tonight and TCU hit more shots then we did," said head women's basketball coach Samantha Morrow. "Their size and zone defense really bothered us tonight. We have to do a better job on our zone offense but that's something we're going to work on."
The Lady Frogs opened the second half on a 13-4 run, leading by as many as 16 points with 13:37 left in the game, making the score 42-26.
UTA struggled in the second half connecting only on five field goals to TCU's 15 from the floor. The Mavericks finished the game shooting 24.1 percent (14-of-58) from the field, 14.3 (3-of-21) from behind the arc, and 82.5 percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line.
Senior Erin Dixon recorded her second double-double of the 2008-09 season with a team-high 13 points and 11 rebounds in 40 minutes of action while Champion notched 12 points and 13 boards for the Mavs.
Sverrisdottir posted a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds while TK LaFleur finished with 13 points and seven boards.
The Mavericks will head to Lubbock, Texas for a match-up against Big 12 opponent Texas Tech on Sunday, November 23, 2008 with tip-off slated for 2 p.m.
