MEN'S TENNIS WINS TRIO OF MATCHES

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team posted a trio of wins last week to improve to 7-9 on the season and 2-2 in Southland Conference matches.

The Mavs started the week with a 4-3 win over Columbia on Wednesday in Arlington and then hit the road for a pair of SLC matches. UTA downed UTSA 4-3 on Friday and then proceeded to win 5-2 at UT Pan American on Saturday.

Columbia got the jump on UTA, winning the doubles point. Doubles duo of Hugo Taracido and Gonzalo Bienzobas did win the No. 3 doubles match 8-6 over Jared Drucker and Dan Urban, but Columbia secured the point with wins in the first and second doubles matches.

The Mavericks battled back to win the match with singles victories at the first, third, fourth and fifth single match-ups. David Costa evened the match at 1-1 with the straight set 6-3, 6-0 win over Mark Clemente as the number one single. Sophomore Gonzalo Bienzobas secured the win for UTA with the fourth point of the match for the Mavs, downing Justin Chow 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot.

On Friday, UTA was able to secure its first SLC win of the season over UTSA. Similar to Wednesday the Mavs found themselves behind 0-1 after the doubles matches. Taracido was the first to score for the Mavs, dominating Andre Moreira 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 position.

The other three points won by UTA came in three-set matches. Costa as the No. 1 single won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 over Robin Fernandes, while Bienzobas battled Daniel Moreiras in the No. 5 slot to win 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. As the No. 4 single Brieuc Hamon was shutout in his first set 0-6, but battled back to win the point and match for the Mavs 7-5, 7-5.

UTA had an easier time on Saturday against UT Pan American. The Mavs headed into singles play up 1-0 after winning the doubles point. The same three individuals secured the victory for the Mavs picking up wins in their singles matches. Taracido won 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles position over Nirvick Mohinta and Bienzobas downed Brett Bernstein 6-4, 6-2 in the five slot. Hamon battled again in the No. 4 spot winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Andrew Irving. Costa won the fifth point when Ivan Avila retired down 6-0, 2-0 as the No. 1 singles.

The Mavs will return to the courts on April 1 when they host SLC opponent Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center
