UT Arlington/Holiday Inn Invitational Tournament Central

ARLINGTON, Texas- The Houston Cougars defeated UT Arlington 25-13, 25-8, 25-21, on Saturday afternoon in the first match on the second day of competition at the UT Arlington/Holiday Inn Invitational at Texas Hall.

The Cougars tallied a .365 hitting percentage while the Mavs were unable to hit for a positive hitting percentage in the first two sets of the match.

The Mavericks fall to 4-9 on the season, having lost seven of their last eight matches overall. Houston finishes its competition at the Holiday Inn Invitational with a 2-0 record. The Cougars improve to 6-5 overall, after defeating UALR and the Mavericks this weekend.

Only four UT Arlington players hit for a positive hitting percentage, with sophomore setter Raegan Daniel leading the team with six kills and a .364 hitting percentage.

The Mavericks trailed by just two points (9-11) after Tara Frantz notched one of her three kills in the first set before Houston went on a 9-2 run to take a commanding 20-11 lead. The Cougars finished out the set with a 25-13 win behind four kills from senior outside hitter Justine Farmer and 12 assists from senior setter Kelsey King.

The second set was all Cougars from the start with Houston tallying an 8-1 lead in the early going to force a UT Arlington timeout. Houston finished the second set with a .524 hitting percentage while the Mavericks posted just three kills on nine attack errors (-.261 hitting percentage).

Freshman outside hitter Ingrida Zauere paced the Cougars with five kills in the second set. Freshman Christy Driscoll recorded all three kills for the Mavs in the second set.

UT Arlington battled Houston in the third set after falling behind early, 2-6. Mavs senior Michelle Schwartz helped lead the Mavs to their largest lead (15-12) with three kills in four attempts during the third set. Schwartz' season debut also included an ace, one dig and a block.

Farmer led all players with 12 kills while Zauere (11 kills), libero Amanda Carson (15 digs) and Kelsey King (36 assists) all had strong performances for Houston.

Freshman Emily Shearin led the Mavs with three blocks, freshman Alicia Shaffer posted a team-high 11 digs and Daniel added 15 assists with four digs.

UT Arlington will finish play at the Holiday Inn Invitational tonight taking on New Mexico (9-2) at 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.

MATCH NOTES:
The Mavericks fall to 20-27 all time against Houston... UT Arlington is now 45-40 overall against Conference-USA opponents... Houston has won 11 of the last 12 meetings against the Mavs dating back to 1990... The Mavericks eight points in the second set is the lowest in any set this season.
